Lionsgate released the first teaser trailer for Day Drinker on Thursday, an upcoming horror thriller starring Johnny Depp, Madelyn Cline, and Penélope Cruz, set for March 26, 2027.
Marc Webb directed the movie, and Zach Dean wrote the screenplay. Day Drinker follows a bartender on a private yacht, played by Cline, who gets entangled in a mystery when she meets a strange guest, played by Depp. They get entangled with a criminal character, played by Cruz, and realize their connection runs deeper than they expected. Depp plays Kelly, Cline plays Lorna, and Cruz plays Cara Lazaro.
The trailer is focused on its horror mood. The trailer shows Depp with grey hair, a scraggly beard, deep eyes, and a strong accent, where he is arrested after getting knocked down. Tarot cards, candles, and axes hint at future events.
“I’ve made a living out of misbehavior,” says Depp in the trailer.
The trailer hints at gun and axe fights, a Cruz character with supernatural powers, scenes on water, and what drives Depp’s character to take revenge as a woman dies in the ocean. Eventually, he is seen thinking about the mystery of his life: “What if all of this is a ghost story?”
This movie marks another important moment in Johnny Depp’s comeback. Apart from Paramount’s upcoming film ‘Ebenezer’ opening on November 13, ‘Day Drinker’ provides audiences with Depp’s double appearance after his split from Hollywood because of the accusations of domestic violence in 2016 and the defamation trial in 2022 during his divorce from Amber Heard.
‘Day Drinker’ reunites Depp and Cruz with a fourth collaboration after they appeared in Blow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express. Cline is known for her role in Netflix’s Outer Banks and has appeared in the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer.
The rest of the cast includes Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
Marc Webb, who is known for (500) Days of Summer, Gifted, and Disney’s Snow White, directs the movie. Dean has written screenplays for The Tomorrow War and Fast X.
The movie has been in development since late 2023, when Lionsgate announced the project with Depp and Cruz starring in it. Production on the film began in April 2025 in Spain. “It’s a thrilling, ferocious story to tell,” said Marc Webb.
Marc Webb’s team comprises cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, production designer Jan Roelfs, and costume designer Penny Rose.
Iwanyk, Lee, Kolbrenner, Kahane, and Nathan Kahane produced the film. The producer Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee of Thunder Road also produce the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate. Kolbrenner has produced The Tomorrow War, Free Guy, and Prisoners.
The movie’s executive producers include Dan Friedkin, Micah Green, Daniel Steinman, Stephen Deuters, Jason Forman, Sam Sarkar, Webb, Eric Sherman, Sarah Hong, Scott LaStaiti, and Adrián Guerra.
Lionsgate presents the movie in association with 30WEST and Media Capital Technologies. The movie is a Thunder Road production in association with IN.2 and Nostromo Pictures, and a Baby Door production.
