The Upside debuts at number one in the box office with a $19.6 Million dollar opening. This movie finally dethrones Aquaman for the top spot in the box office.
Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart co-star in “The Upside,” which marks the studio’s first No. 1 opening. It also ranks as the second-best start for an STX film behind “Bad Moms,” which launched with $23 million in 2016.
What’s even more promising for STX is that “The Upside,” based on the 2011 French hit “Les Intouchables,” was able to overcome its rocky path to the big screen.
Our founder Wayne Ayers says, “This is Kevin Hart at his best,” this film will make you laugh and sad at the same. It creates emotion swings for the audience which speaks to the greatness of the writers and the cast of the film.
The real winner in theaters this weekend, however, has to be Nicole Kidman. The Australian actress co-stars in “The Upside” and “Aquaman,” the top two movies at the domestic box office. Also, HBO released a new trailer this week for her show “Big Little Lies.”
Upside‘s No. 1 opening is a boost for STX’s mission of releasing low-to-mid budget films, with targeted marketing costs, in an effort to yield profitable hits. As the Disney-Fox merger looms upon us, rival distributors believe that mid-budget fare will see a boom. Here’s the first example of that trend in 2019.
