What would you do if you had a lot of money?
After living in poverty all their lives, three sisters were faced with this question when they suddenly came across a mysterious sum of 70 billion won.
Premiering on September 3, Little Women is packed with twists and turns as the three sisters face up to the richest family in Korea.
Vincenzo director out to challenge mindsets
Director Kim Hee won, who directed the series Vincenzo, said that she wanted to “build a story that viewers can resonate with, which covers both our everyday lives and our profound imaginations.”
Writer Chung Seo Kyung, best known for The Handmaiden and, more recently, Decision to Leave, said she imagined the sisters in Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, Little Women, as living in modern times, and started with the question “What if the sisters came to Korea?’’
Throw in an impoverished upbringing, the lure of easy money, and three sisters with distinctive personalities played by prominent actors — and you have the recipe for a gripping mystery drama.
The sisterly bond between the three actresses
Kim Go Eun plays Oh Injoo, the hardworking and exhausted eldest sister who feels compelled to provide for the family. Kim has earned kudos for her acting skills in the fantasy romance dramas Guardian: The Lonely and Great God and The King: Eternal Monarch. This time, she widens her acting chops to include playing the scheming big sister who takes big risks for money.
Nam Ji-Hyun of 100 Days My Prince fame plays the middle sister Oh Inkyung, a journalist with strong convictions who proves wiser than her big sister. Park Ji Hu, last seen in All of Us Are Dead is Oh Inhye, the sensitive and artistic youngest sister much shielded by her older siblings.
Director Kim said: “The three actors have such warm chemistry with their kind personalities and professional attitudes. They are supportive of one other, which makes them a perfect ensemble.”
She also credited production designer Ryu Seong-hee for doing the “perfect job in painting the perfect picture’’ with elaborate sets and music composer Park Se-joon for the different genre tracks including classical music. Kim, who worked with Park on Vincenzo, said his music “imbued power into the entire production.”
Other cast members include Wi Hajun of Squid Game fame and veteran actors Um Kijoon and Uhm Ji-won.
Little Women premieres on Netflix on September 3.
