Elizabeth City State University announced on Friday that it received a $42 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. This is one of the biggest donations the school has ever received. The announcement was made by the school’s Chancellor, S. Keith Hargrove Sr., who delivered the keynote speech at the Founders Day Convocation.

This is the biggest amount a historically black college or university funded by MacKenzie Scott has ever received. Additionally, this amount is nearly three times what ECSU received from MacKenzie Scott in 2020.

The timing of this announcement could not be better for the school, as it is rolling out its five-year plan, ASCEND 2030. “I’m incredibly grateful to MacKenzie Scott for this generous gift and for recognizing the important role HBCUs play in expanding opportunity and strengthening communities,” Hargrove said. “Her investment confirms what we already know: ECSU and schools like it are powerfully driving change.”

The money will be used to fund several major projects within the school.

That includes endowed scholarships to enhance our students’ learning and success, as well as endowed funds for new and innovative academic programs and growth initiatives. The funds will also be used to enhance academic, athletic, and residential facilities, providing an even richer experience for our students, faculty, and staff.

“Gifts like this do more than just provide resources; they accelerate momentum,” Hargrove said. “This gift allows ECSU to move boldly toward the future while staying true to the mission that’s guided us for 135 years.”

The announcement comes as the university is celebrating its 135th anniversary with the March 13 Founders Day Convocation.

ECSU was founded in 1891 to widen access to education. Over the years, it has evolved from a traditional teaching college into a modern university focused on student-centered learning and community engagement.

This gift will continue to reinforce ECSU’s mission to educate, empower, and elevate future generations, as well as its position as a beacon for opportunity for our students and our communities.
