Singer-songwriter Maddie Regent of Los Angeles debuted a whimsical, movie-like pop single on Friday titled “Lizzy.” The song is about two people drawn to each other but determined not to fall for one another.
Maya Sassoon created the official music video.
“Lizzy” is driven by witty, intense lyrics and romantic tension. It tells the story of a person doing their best to convince themselves they hate someone who is clearly irresistible. They attend a party they promised themselves they’d skip, and finally admit to “trying everything to hate you darling, / I hate to say it but I can’t.”
“Lizzy” is a romance story about two enemies who become lovers.
“My favorite love stories start with two enemies who spend all their time fighting their attraction to one another,” Regent said. “I wanted to write a song that captured that stubborn, inevitable love.”
Maddie Regent was born and raised in Toronto and creates captivating songs blending romance, anxieties, fantasies, and heartache. Her love of staging plays and spending hours playing make-believe games as a child shaped a storytelling style that romanticizes life’s intensity.
Regent started writing songs at 12, but became a musician only during college.
So far, her discography includes two EPs, Miss Regent and Girl of Your Dreams, and her first album, On the Phone With My Mom, released in 2025.
The artist’s fan base keeps growing, getting recognition from tastemakers including Ones to Watch, Atwood Magazine, and Earmilk.
