The level of women’s snowboarding has not only leveled up. Murase Kokomo, representing Japan, has sensationally laid down the first-ever backside triple cork 1620 in history, and snowboarding has reached another orbit, with its entire community holding its collective breath.
The Beijing 2022 big air bronze medalist and longtime prodigy of progression, Murase, dropped this historic clip with this ridiculously laid-back comment that has to be illegal in some capacity:
“Omg bs 1620.”
That’s it. No essay. No explanation needed. Simply this four-and-a-half rotation, triple off-axis, backward landing move executed with utmost nonchalance.
Where the Magic Happened
Murase landed the history-making trick at Prime Park Sessions on Austria’s Stubai Glacier, an elevated testing ground where the world’s finest snowboarders convene to innovate with gravity, momentum, and outright mayhem. The winter camp has been known to host moments of sport-changing tricks, but even by Stubai standards, Murase’s was shake-the-mountain material.
So… What Exactly Is a Backside Triple Cork 1620?
Murase spun backwards for four and a half full turns, hit three off-axis corked tricks, and still managed to land a switch trick like she’s parking a car.
To describe it as difficult is an understatement. This is one trick that makes better athletes pause in mid-exercise and scream together as one.
The Girls Went Wild in the Comments
The same sisterhood that characterized the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games appeared right away.
“Wow wow wow Queen,” Beijing big air queen Anna Gasser shouted.
Silver medalist Zoi Sadowski Synnott contributed with a jubilant “Cocooooo,” along with reposting this video as if it were a national crisis.
If your competitors are praising you louder than your own PR staff, you know you’ve created something seismic.
A Sport in Full-Blown Evolution
Murase’s trick doesn’t only show her skills. This is what’s to come, and it’s all rushing towards Milan-Cortina 2026.
Her peers have been busy rewriting the limits as well:
- Anna Gasser: Carried over her Beijing winning trick and elevated it with a cab triple cork 1260 to claim gold at the 2025 X Games.
- Zoi Sadowski Synnott added a new trick to the event with a backside triple cork 1440.
- Reira Iwabuchi: Upgraded her spinning skills with a frontside double cork 1440.
- Mia Brookes: The British phenom, entering Olympic competition for the first time, started last season with a Cab 1440 flat spin.
Each of these individuals is propelling their sport into an era that was considered to be decades away.
The World Will See It Live Next Month
Mark your calendars for 5-6 December, as the first major big air World Cup at Secret Garden, China, will feature these so-called ‘weapons-grade’ tricks making their competition debut.
So, if Murase’s 1620 is anything to go by, it’s not only ready for Milano Cortina, they’re rewriting rule books, and that’s two years early.
