The New York Police Department is in mourning upon learning of the untimely death of Detective Alicia Stone, aged 40, mother of three, who has passed away after undergoing a series of risky cosmetic surgeries in Colombia.
A Trip for Renewal Ends in Unthinkable Death
The victim, a 13-year veteran cop from the NYPD, had traveled to Cali on October 16th for a liposuction procedure, along with a gluteal fat harvest, also called a Brazilian Butt Lift. The trip, meant to lead to confidence and transformation, turned tragic only a week later.
After the surgeries, Stone was released for recovery at a nearby hotel. However, on October 23, she was found unresponsive in her hotel room around 6:30 a.m. She was rushed to Fundación Valle del Lili Hospital, where, less than an hour after arriving, she was pronounced dead due to unspecified cardiac arrest, according to sources from law enforcement that the New York Daily News quoted.
Anticoagulants and pain relievers were the medications that the woman, Stone, had been prescribed.
THE HUSBAND LEFT BROKEN AND WITH NO ANSWERS
This has left Michael Stone, her husband, to face the reality that he has to raise their three children without his partner by his side. This is how Michael remembered that fateful day when he received the heartbreaking phone call from the doctors around 11 a.m.“The doctor said, ‘I’m so sorry. Your wife had some kind of medical episode, and they tried to save her.’ She didn’t know anything. She said it could’ve been a heart attack or a blood clot. Something just doesn’t add up,” he told ABC News.
Alicia, he called “beautiful,” “a perfectionist,” both in her home life and professional life, where she advanced rapidly through the NYPD. Of Alicia’s health, Michael said that “she appeared healthy and happy when we talked yesterday,” Alicia having made phone contact with family members the day prior to her death. “I don’t have the facts, that’s what I need, the facts of what happened,” he said, his shock and pain “unimaginable.”
Explode in Anger, Then Dissolve in Sorrow
Stone leaves behind her husband and three little children, whose lives are irreparably altered by her absence. Of her, a fund set up by her family declares, “She is a devoted wife, loving mother of three, and a dedicated public servant,” while also stating that her “children face an unimaginable loss.”
As of October 27, the campaign had raised over $16,000 of its $50,000 goal for the family to support them through funeral and living costs.
Searching for Truth in the Wake of Tragedy
The NYPD has so far confirmed the death of Stone, although it has refused to comment on allegations that it dispatched a detective to Colombia to conduct investigations. The family has also reached the State Department, Colombian National Police, and U.S. officials in their quest for answers. Michael Stone has promised to request a comprehensive autopsy when it is brought back to the United States. “I have no trust at this point in anything that has occurred in Colombia,” he said.
The Perilous Game of Plastic Surgery Overseas
However, health professionals state that fat transfers in the gluteal region, although rising in popularity, entail dangers that are significantly higher than in any other aesthetic surgery. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons has listed fat embolisms, whereby fat may pass through the blood vessels, causing deadly obstruction, as possible complications.
One study, published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal in 2017, gave the mortality rate worldwide for the procedure as one in every 3,448 patients, nearly 15 times higher than the total number for cosmetic surgery in the United States.
