Here’s the first teaser trailer for The Last Showgirl, the glittering drama of tenderness by renowned director Gia Coppola, aiming to provide a first glimpse into its sparkling, glamorous, and unbreakable world. Slated to open in theaters this coming December, The Last Showgirl brings Pamela Anderson back to the big screen with the career-defining role of Shelly, a showgirl who is confronted with the end of an era when her long-running, 30-year-old troupe closes down unexpectedly.
By Kate Gersten, the screenplay follows Shelly as she navigates a personal emotional odyssey of self-questioning and into a very unsure future. Decades after dazzling audiences on stage, Shelly must take the painful road to reimagine life when her iconic show comes to an abrupt, unexpected halt. The trailer introduces Shelly, who, faced with the implacable brutalities of aging and change, is forced to get real amidst the blingy ruins of a once-thriving world.
Joining Anderson for this wildly talented cast are Oscar®, SAG®, and Golden Globe® winner Jamie Lee Curtis as Shelly’s best friend and confidante. Meanwhile, Curtis is promising emotional depth with her complex and supportive character, adding her particular brilliance into the film. Closing out the action star cast is Dave Bautista, actress Billie Lourd, and younger stars Brenda Song, Kiernan Shipka, and Billie Lourd in pivotal roles that chart friendship, self-discovery, and resilience.
In a statement, Gia Coppola talks about her vision of the film, which praises strength and transformation in The Last Showgirl. “I wanted to tell a story about the grit and grace that comes with reinvention,” Coppola said. “Shelly’s journey is not just about the end of one chapter, but the beginning of something new.”
But perhaps the film’s most memorable moment comes in the form of an original song, “Beautiful That Way,” performed by pop sensation Miley Cyrus. The song, which Cyrus wrote with Lykke Li and Academy Award-nominated producer Andrew Wyatt, is slotted to feature big in the movie and already promises to resonate with audiences both on and off the screen. The song’s haunting melody promises to be a key emotional touchstone in the film, Cyrus’s raw vocal performance complementing the poignant themes of the story.
Co-written and co-produced by Schwartzman, Farrey, and Coppola herself, The Last Showgirl becomes something of a fizzy dance through show business, self-worth, and the pains of reinvention. A delicate balance of humor and heartbreak, The Last Showgirl concerns itself with the sparkling world of showgirls and the messiness of human relationships.
The Last Showgirl will be released as a limited engagement at AMC Century City on December 13, 2024, for one week only, and will go wide on January 10, 2025. With its all-star cast, absorbing storyline, and memorable music, it is bound to impress audiences worldwide in their quest for something new yet touching, with all the brilliance and frequently cruel world of show business.
With high praise that includes fans of Pamela Anderson, Gia Coppola’s directorial vision, and stories of both resilience and reinvention, there is much promise for The Last Showgirl to be one of this winter’s must-see films.
The Last Showgirl will premiere in national theaters on January 10, 2025.
