Twitch legend Pokimane has just added another chapter to her internet legend, and, thankfully, it’s none of the above. This time, it’s all about one very puzzling man and his DMs.
On one of her recent live streams, the Moroccan-Canadian internet sensation, with more than 9 million fans on Twitch, admitted to having been messaged by a man complimenting her and asking her out for several months. Nothing out of the ordinary in the world of streamers. until he posted his engagement on Instagram.
Pokimane’s response? Confusion and anger in equal parts.
“Tell me why this guy has been DMing me for months, trying to link up, responding to my outfit pics, etc. And he just announced his engagement on Instagram,” she explained. “It pisses me off because it’s in that gray area of like, I don’t think that this warrants messaging the girl and being like, ‘hey girl.’ But also it’s fucking odd. Then again, maybe they’re in an open relationship. I don’t freaking know.”
Her rant quickly went viral, sparking an online debate involving parasocial relationships, respect, and boundaries in the world of creators and their fan base.
“It’s the Audacity for Me”: The Internet Reacts
Of course, the comments section below lit up quicker than a subathon on Twitch.
There were also some viewers showing sympathy with Pokimane’s discomfort, acknowledging the situation in which “many women in her position must deal with strange gray area interactions with men.
One person wrote,
“The fact that such patterns of behavior surprise some individuals in the room gives me the impression they don’t know shit about the world. What an ugly place. Do not trust in much. People are scum, and few will find themselves with the right heart and right morals.”
However, others took the “she’s overreacting” approach, and the hot takes rolled in.
“Wait, so she didn’t even bother with the DMs, he moved on, and now she’s mad?” another person had tweeted.
“Women too can be losers just like men???? ‘ignored’ but you know when he’s getting married ????,” added another.
And the doubts did not end there.
“Lol so she was looking at his profile/stories? She liked the attention, huh,” another one chimed in. “Just knowing there’s a man desperate enough to DM her like that.”
“Why wasn’t she blocked if he was trying to get with her for months? On top of that, she was reviewing his Instagram page and got angry he moved on?”
So, there’s Team Poki and then there’s Team ‘He Just Moved On.’
