Minnesota congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, is expressing her skepticism about the authenticity of President Donald Trump’s Christian faith following Trump’s verbal assault on Pope Leo XIV for speaking about the virtues of peace and condemning the United States’ military and deportation policies.
The confrontation between Trump and the pontiff worsened when Pope Leo XIV made a passionate appeal for migrants and criticized war, prompting backlash from Trump and other cabinet members, such as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who stated that the Pope had no place to lead the Catholic Church due to his unfitness to serve as its spiritual leader.
Congresswoman Omar strongly condemned such accusations in an interview.
“So, Congressman, what do you make of Donald Trump’s attacks on the Pope? And not just Donald Trump, but also Pete Hegseth and some of these other administration officials who have been coming out to attack the Pope as somehow not apt as a spiritual leader,” the interviewer inquired.
“How deranged do you have to be to be upset with the Pope for preaching about peace and love in the spirit of Jesus Christ?” Omar responded. “And so it is telling that these people that say that they’re people of faith, that they are far from being people of faith and far from practicing Christianity and having respect for the Bible and religious leaders.”
According to Congresswoman Omar, this controversy demonstrated hypocrisy among people who claim to have Christian faith while criticizing the Pope for preaching the core tenets of Christianity.
Her comments have been widely shared on social media platforms, with many users pointing out the irony of a Muslim congressman defending the teachings of Jesus and Pope Leo XIV more fiercely than any GOP member of Congress.
“The Muslim Congresswoman is providing a more eloquent defense of the gospel of Jesus Christ and Pope Leo XIV than any other Christian GOP Member of Congress,” one user commented.
