“Sacred Soil” dives into the rich history of one of America’s oldest Black boarding schools, directed by J.J. Anderson in his feature debut, and executive produced by Andscape’s Kelley L. Carter, J.J. Anderson, Marc Jordan, and Jason Aidoo. The documentary claims to provide an unprecedented look into the Piney Woods School’s numerous layers, chronicling the emotional and academic struggles of its students.

The documentary’s official trailer, which was published simultaneously, teases the colorful storytelling and captivating narratives that will unravel on screen. The film provides a moving image of the toll that young Black people face while pursuing an education in America, focusing on the students’ distinct views.

Before its Hulu premiere, “Sacred Soil: The Piney Woods School Story” will have a special showing on February 10 at the 32nd Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles. The festival, founded by industry veterans Danny Glover, the late Ja’Net DuBois, and Ayuko Babu, has established itself as a key forum for displaying various storytelling.

Director J.J. Anderson, known for prior works such as “Home/Free,” “Positive Space,” and “Jonah,” acknowledged his pleasure in working with Andscape on this project. He sees the video as a passionate testament to love, community, and culture, providing viewers with an in-depth look into the Piney Woods School.

Dr. Will Crossley, president of The Piney Woods School and alumnus, thanked Andscape and the production team for bringing the school’s story to life. Dr. Crossley hopes that the video will highlight the Piney Woods School’s 115-year dedication to producing future leaders through education and empowerment, as well as the tenacious spirit that defines the institution.
