A family is filing a lawsuit for wrongful death after their child passed away from consuming a beverage that was “charged” at Panera Bread.
According to NBC News, the family is referring to it as a “dangerous energy drink” and claims that Panera neglected to inform consumers about its hazards following its viral popularity on TikTok.
Sarah Katz, a 21-year-old University of Pennsylvania student, had a pre-existing heart condition known as long QT syndrome type 1. She was cautioned by doctors to steer clear of consuming energy drinks.
On September 10th, 2022, Katz bought a lemonade from Panera Bread that was not labeled as an energy drink, experienced cardiac arrest, and ultimately passed away.
Her friend says that if she had known the amount of caffeine in the drink, she is confident that Sarah would never have consumed it.
The lemonade that had a charge was provided alongside all the non-caffeinated and/or low-caffeine beverages at Panera.
The ingredients of Panera’s “Charged Lemonade” include sugar, caffeine, coffee extract, and guarana extract, all of which are sources of caffeine.
Health experts have cautioned about the potential risks faced by young individuals who consume energy drinks, including harmful effects like dehydration, an irregular heartbeat, and even heart failure.
