Emmy Award-winning actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has officially joined the cast of Ready or Not: Here I Come, the highly anticipated sequel to 2019’s cult horror-thriller Ready or Not. The announcement, confirmed by multiple sources including The Wrap and Fangoria, signals a triumphant return to the horror genre for Gellar, best known for her work in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Grudge.

Production has now begun in Toronto with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind both Ready or Not and the recent Scream reboots, once again at the helm.

A Legacy Cast Meets a New Generation

Gellar joins a dynamic ensemble that includes returning lead Samara Weaving reprising her breakout role as Grace, alongside newcomers Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings, Come to Daddy), Kathryn Newton (Freaky), Kevin Durand (The Strain), Shawn Hatosy (Animal Kingdom), and Néstor Carbonell (Lost, The Dark Knight). Acclaimed Canadian director and actor David Cronenberg also appears in a supporting role.

The casting reflects the franchise’s blend of horror royalty and genre-defying performers, a hallmark of Radio Silence Productions, the creative team behind the original film and recent Scream installments.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Return to Horror

For fans of late-90s and early-2000s horror, Gellar’s casting is a nostalgic homecoming. Speaking to Fangoria, producer William Sherak said, “Sarah brings with her an undeniable gravitas and familiarity with genre storytelling. She’s an actress who understands the rhythm of horror — the balance of suspense, tension, and emotion.”

Though her exact role remains under wraps, Gellar is rumored to play a matriarchal figure connected to the mysterious Le Domas family, whose twisted traditions fueled the chaos in the first film.

The Creative Team Behind the Curtain

The sequel is written by original scribe Guy Busick, alongside R. Christopher Murphy. Producers include James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Scream VI), Bradley J. Fischer, William Sherak, and Tripp Vinson. The project is being developed under the banner of Searchlight Pictures, who also backed the original 2019 film.

Cinematographer Brett Jutkiewicz and production designer Martin Whist, both of whom worked on the first film, have also returned, a testament to the studio’s confidence in preserving the visual and tonal continuity of the franchise.

What to Expect from the Sequel

While the filmmakers have kept plot details under tight lock and key, Ready or Not: Here I Come is expected to expand on the mythology established in the original. That film followed Grace, a new bride who finds herself hunted by her ultra-wealthy in-laws as part of a sadistic ritual. Its biting commentary on class warfare, wrapped in razor-sharp horror-comedy, earned it critical acclaim and a devoted fan base.

“The original was lightning in a bottle,” co-director Bettinelli-Olpin said in a recent interview. “With this sequel, we’re building a world that’s bigger, weirder, and even more twisted, and having Sarah and Elijah onboard helps us elevate that vision.”

A Box Office Hit with Cult Status

Released in August 2019, Ready or Not grossed over $57 million worldwide on a modest $6 million budget. The film’s success not only reinvigorated Samara Weaving’s career but also solidified Radio Silence as key players in the new era of meta-horror.

“The pressure is definitely on,” admitted Tyler Gillett. “But the fanbase has been incredibly vocal about wanting more. We wouldn’t be here without them.”

A Genre-Bending Future

Gellar’s involvement underscores a broader trend in horror filmmaking that blends nostalgia, satire, and social commentary. As the horror landscape continues to evolve, Ready or Not: Here I Come positions itself as both a love letter to fans of the original and a bold step forward for the genre.

A release date for the film has yet to be announced, but excitement is already building as cameras roll and the Le Domas legacy prepares to unfold once again.
