Sarah Paulson on Hollywood Snub After “The People v. O.J. Simpson”: “Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance Both Got Big Movies and I Did Not”

Sarah Paulson has won all major television acting awards for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark in the miniseries The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, but the actress said no movie roles she expected after “O.J.” have been offered to her.

In particular, Sarah Paulson said two of her co-stars in the 2016 FX limited series have received major movie offers, while she hasn’t received any, which she attributes to her gender and age.

“Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance both got big movies after ‘O.J.,’ and I did not, and the only thing I can attribute it to is that I’m a woman, and I was a woman of a certainly age already then,” Paulson told Variety. She was 41 at the time, she said, and was playing “a woman who was not hypersexualized and a character who potentially was, depending on how it hit you, unlikable.”

Sarah Paulson’s performance in “O.J.” made her the first actor to win all five major TV awards for one role, according to Variety.

Sarah Paulson made those remarks while promoting Closing Night, which represents the directing debut feature by her former co-star of American Horror Story, Cody Fern. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this Saturday, where Sarah Paulson portrayed Sandra Vale, an acclaimed stage actress whose life is ruined just before her Broadway opening. Naomi Watts, Dianne Wiest, Toby Wallace, and Odessa A’zion are other stars of the movie.

Cody Fern wrote the screenplay together with Devon Bostick. The movie’s distribution rights are currently under discussion.
