Sarah Smith Brings Back the Tumblr Era With “Point of No Return,” Where “Escapism and Anxiety Can Coexist”

New York pop singer-songwriter Sarah Smith has dropped her new single “Point of No Return” on Wednesday. “Point of No Return” is a dark electropop song about desire, anxiety, and self-sabotage, wrapped in pulsating production.

At its core, Smith portrays a damsel in distress in an emotional contradiction: she craves being chosen and feels secure, but cannot help resisting it all the same. The chorus always starts with Smith telling us she is the favorite girl, and she asks what is demanded of her in pleading tones.

During the whole track, Smith divides herself into an “I” and a “she”, observing how she creates a situation which she is trying to get out of. At the same time, Smith becomes both a distressed woman and the one holding the weapon.

“It’s a song for the anxious avoidant girlies,” Smith said. “I’m drawn to big, nostalgic pop that can make sadness and anxiety feel cinematic and beautiful. I grew up on the Tumblr and recession pop eras, and I love that melodramatic world-building, where escapism and anxiety can coexist.”

Producer Carlos Ruiz helped the artist translate her emotions into the track’s production. After creating a solid demo, Smith’s twin brother Jason Smith, who had been collaborating with her on the song, joined to improve the lyrics and melodies.

“Point of No Return” is Smith’s second single, following her debut “No Hard Feelings” in 2025.

Although Sarah Smith is just beginning her music career, she has been performing for years. She started dancing at four and later performed professionally on projects with the Brooklyn Nets and Nickelodeon.

After graduating from college, she started writing her own music and later met producer Carlos Ruiz, who inspired her to try different genres and find her own style.

In her music, Sarah Smith draws on maximalist pop from Chvrches, Robyn, Marina & the Diamonds, Kylie Minogue, and 1980s new wave, blending it with the pop she grew up listening to in the Tumblr era. The result is emotionally complex, dark, and intense pop that sounds powerful and close, reflecting Smith’s inner world.

Smith’s songs explore aspects of getting older, including intimate relationships, self-sabotage, craving attention, and performing for someone else.
