Sophie Cunningham has her say, and she didn’t whisper. The basketball star stole everyone’s attention after she appeared in an episode of the Show Me Something Podcast, where she expressed one message loudly and clearly: nobody proposes to her at a sports event because her proposal would be a right hook punch to start and finish an engagement.
This line from Cunningham’s has gone viral in full force, stemming from her podcasting experience, as she expressed it during her talk-show episode. “I swear, if anybody ever proposes to me at any sporting event, I would punch them in the nose, and I would leave,” she said. “Where did he do it? He did it on the field? I’ll tell you what, I bet this f***ing fratty f***ing Ole Miss, this Ole Miss couple, they loved it. There is no f***ing way in hell. If anybody ever did that to me, actually, they wouldn’t because I wouldn’t be getting proposed to because they’d know I wouldn’t be down for that.”
Her cohost, West, quickly reminded her of an actual couple who had just gotten engaged on an Ole Miss football field, who had enjoyed every moment of it. The contrast between this golden hour sports rom-com moment for this actual couple and Sophie’s hard refusal to get publicly ambushed for a ring is pure comedy gold. The video quickly gained popularity online, as fans took sides faster than an overtime buzzer.
“And the comment section delivered.”
One viewer commented, “Agreed. Why would you put someone you say you love in that position? It is a little shady, agreed. Sophie got the right idea. Not romantic. It is manipulative unless you know without a doubt this is her dream.”
One of them joked, “Remind me never to propose to Sophie at a sporting event.”
A different person’s thoughts turned to philosophy as he wrote, “A proposal is something between two people, a special moment between the love of your life. And if she said no, then you can be embarrassed in front of only one person, even if it breaks your heart. I know that for sure.”
A different viewer, however, might have no idea what the concept is all about. “Still do not understand why anyone would do this at a large sports game event, concerts, malls, etc. The attention is not on you.”
One of them responded, “Same, Sophie. Same.”
Of course, no viral event is complete without an unwanted bystander who hates it. “Domestic violence, really? What a disgusting young girl.” A level of drama worthy of a whistle of its own.
Others took a more lighthearted tone. “I would never propose at a game. That is so cheesy.”
And then, as always, came the traditional cyber jab: “Lmaoo, well, I guess that makes sense because she’s single.”
Whether you support Sophie’s no-stadium proposal policy or not, one thing is for sure. She is single-handedly breathing new life into the age-old debate over proposal locations as a woman who knows what she wants in her romances. Romance is for everyone, but forever is open to interpretation by many couples, even those who have sealed their commitment with an engagement ring.
For Sophie Cunningham, forever is not necessarily in a stadium, at least not in a proposal scenario. And now every man in America knows where he is definitely not to get down on one knee.
