Rain’s disclosure has sparked renewed debate about how much money content creators can make on OnlyFans, a subscription-based platform and creator economy. A number of creators have reported eye-popping earnings, but industry data underlines how varied those earnings really are.
Breaking Down OnlyFans Earnings
Last week, OnlyFans parent company, Fenix International, filed its UK regulatory report, offering a glimpse into the platform’s 2023 financials (up until November). The filing revealed significant growth:
- Creator Accounts: Increased 29%, from 3.2 million to 4.1 million.
- Fan Accounts: Grew 28%, from 239,000 to 305,000.
- Gross Payments: Rose by $1 billion, from $5.6 billion in 2022 to $6.6 billion in 2023.
Despite the platform’s explosive growth, the average creator’s earnings remain modest. Variety calculated that OnlyFans creators collectively netted $5.32 billion in 2023, which translates to an average yearly payout of $1,300 per creator. This figure factors in all creators, including those who are inactive or earn minimal income.
How Does the Money Flow?
OnlyFans allows creators to keep 80% of their earnings, while the platform retains a 20% cut. Fenix International’s 2023 financial report showed that OnlyFans generated $1.3 billion in revenue—a $217 million increase from the previous year. Profit before tax stood at $658 million.
The platform’s sole shareholder, Leonid Radvinsky, reaped immense benefits. According to The Telegraph, he received $472 million in dividends last year alone. In contrast, the average creator earned significantly less, highlighting the platform’s stark wealth gap.
Rain’s Success Among Few
Sophie Rain’s $43.4 million earnings underscore the disparities on OnlyFans. While her income places her among the platform’s elite earners, her story is far from typical. For most creators, OnlyFans is a supplemental source of income, not a financial windfall.
