Luis Rubiales, after weeks of intense pressure on his position following the FIFA Women’s World Cup final, has confirmed his resignation as the president of RFEF.
Rubiales faced significant backlash for his behavior during the final match, where Spain emerged victorious against England to secure their first world title. This criticism encompassed an incident involving an unwanted kiss on Jenni Hermoso.
The fallout from Rubiales’ behavior has caused ripples in the footballing world, leading to his suspension by FIFA during ongoing investigations.
Despite the ongoing focus on him, Rubiales defiantly refused to resign even though he had apparently been instructed to do so.
As the crisis unfolded, Rubiales maintained his position while the entire World Cup-winning squad resigned.
However, Rubiales has offered his resignation due to the threat of Sweden boycotting Spain’s UEFA Women’s Nations League clash.
The indication remains that he will continue to defend his innocence of any wrongdoing, but his statement represents a decisive move in a significant controversy.
