The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is expanding, and one of the most anticipated introductions is the X-Men. Among the most iconic characters in Marvel Comics is Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm.

Now, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter SZA has thrown her hat into the ring, expressing her desire to portray the powerful mutant in a future MCU film.

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, SZA revealed her dream role, saying:

“She comes from this whole other place where it’s like the jungle. I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm [in an] origin story!”

The internet immediately exploded with excitement, with fans debating whether she could bring the weather-controlling powerhouse to life on the big screen.

SZA’s Deep Connection to Comics

SZA’s passion for comic book characters isn’t just a passing interest, it’s in her DNA. She grew up in a household where comic books were a cherished treasure, thanks to her father, who collected first-edition issues of major superhero titles. She has previously mentioned her admiration for Marvel and DC Comics, highlighting her lifelong appreciation for the genre.

This isn’t SZA’s first brush with superhero-related projects either. She contributed All the Stars with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Panther (2018) soundtrack, a song that received both Grammy and Academy Award nominations. More recently, she even portrayed Catwoman in a high-profile Super Bowl commercial.

Clearly, SZA isn’t just a casual fan. She’s a lifelong comic book nerd with a genuine love for these characters.

Storm’s Legacy in Film and Comics

A Mutant with a Royal Past

Storm, created by writer Len Wein and artist Dave Cockrum, first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975). She is one of the most beloved X-Men characters, known for her ability to control the weather and her rich backstory.

Born in Harlem to a Kenyan princess and an American photojournalist, Ororo Munroe’s life took a dramatic turn when her parents were killed in an attack, leaving her orphaned in Cairo. Eventually, she was worshipped as a goddess before being recruited by Professor X to join the X-Men. Over the decades, she has led the X-Men, been a member of the Avengers, and even ruled Wakanda as the queen alongside Black Panther.

Previous Live-Action Adaptations

So far, Storm has been portrayed twice in live-action films:

  • Halle Berry played Storm in Fox’s original X-Men trilogy and reprised the role in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).
  • Alexandra Shipp took over the role for X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) and Dark Phoenix (2019), offering a younger take on the character.

Both actresses brought unique elements to Storm, but many fans believe the character has yet to receive a truly in-depth exploration of her African origins, which could be the perfect setup for an MCU introduction.

Could an MCU Storm Origin Film Happen?

With Marvel Studios officially regaining the rights to the X-Men following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, fans are eagerly awaiting the mutants’ introduction into the MCU. While there is no confirmed Storm project yet, it would make sense for Marvel to explore the character’s origins, considering her rich mythology.

A solo Storm film could delve into:

  • Her childhood in Egypt, where she lived as a street thief before discovering her mutant abilities.
  • Her time as a goddess, worshipped by an African tribe before being recruited by Charles Xavier.
  • A connection to Wakanda, possibly linking her to the world of Black Panther and King T’Challa’s legacy.

Given that Marvel is emphasizing diverse storytelling, a Storm-focused project would be a natural fit.

SZA vs. Other Storm Contenders

SZA isn’t the only actress interested in playing Storm. In recent months, other stars have voiced their desire to take on the role:

  • Cynthia Erivo (Wicked, Harriet) expressed her deep interest in playing Storm, emphasizing the character’s “inner turmoil” and depth.
  • Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) has been a fan-favorite casting choice, though she has not publicly expressed interest.
  • Kiki Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk) has also been a popular fancast among Marvel fans.
  • Yetide Badaki (American Gods, The Magicians) has also expressed interest in the role and has the commanding presence, rich voice, and regal demeanor that many fans believe Storm needs.

SZA’s biggest advantage? Her raw enthusiasm for the character and her genuine love for comics. If Marvel is looking for someone who can bring both passion and a fresh perspective to Storm, SZA might just be the perfect pick.

Fans React to SZA’s Storm Pitch

Following her statement on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Marvel fans took to social media to discuss the possibility of SZA stepping into the role. Reactions were mixed but mostly positive, with some highlighting her strong screen presence and others questioning whether she has the acting chops to lead a major blockbuster.

Here are some standout fan reactions:

  • “SZA as Storm?? Okay, I can see it! She has the look, the energy, and the nerd cred!”
  • “I love SZA, but I think Marvel should cast a seasoned actress. Storm deserves a powerhouse performance.”
  • “Give SZA acting lessons and let her cook! We need an actress who actually loves the character.”

Could SZA’s Dream Become Reality?

With Marvel Studios keeping a tight lid on their plans for the X-Men, it remains to be seen who will don Storm’s iconic white hair and electrify audiences in the MCU. However, SZA’s passionate pitch has certainly put her on the radar.

If Marvel Studios wants someone who not only looks the part but also feels the character’s legacy, SZA could be a serious contender. Whether it’s a solo origin film or a supporting role in an ensemble X-Men project, the future of Storm in the MCU is looking brighter than ever.

What do you think? Should Marvel cast SZA as Storm, or is there another actress better suited for the role? Let us know your thoughts!
