An 18-year-old Texas woman has been arrested after she allegedly abandoned and endangered a child by leaving her one-month-old son in the care of a stranger at a downtown San Antonio bus stop.
Karla Ibarra reportedly approached Jennifer Benavides at a downtown San Antonio bus stop. She asked if she could use Benavides’ phone sometime around 10:45 p.m. on September 13th, according to People Magazine.
Benavides said Ibarra asked if she would take the child, give the baby to another person, and then give the baby to Benavides. Benavides told KSAT 12 that the baby was a “very beautiful baby. Handsome. 1 month old.”
Ibarra also gave Benavides the child’s birth certificate, Medicaid card, and Social Security card. Once Benavides realized what Ibarra had meant to do, she asked for help from her friends, who were standing nearby. Ibarra arranged an Uber ride and left without taking the baby.
San Antonio Police Department received a call for a disturbance in the 200 block of Broadway just after 11 p.m. They found a woman taking care of a baby that was not hers, according to KVUE. Ibarra returned to the scene and was taken into custody. The baby was placed with his relatives.
According to Law&Crime, Ibarra is facing charges of abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return, and her bail amount has been set at $7,000, according to online court records.
