The Academy welcomes 842 new members, 50% of whom are women, 29% POC

The Academy invited 842 people from the film industry to join its ranks. With 421 of the invites sent to women, the total amount of female members jumped to 32%. Of the new members, 29% are people of color, raising the total number of POC members to 16% (up from 8% in 2015). Some people said the change is a direct result of the viral movement #OscarsSoWhite.

Notable new members are Winston Duke, Lady Gaga, Sterling K Brown, Jonathan M Chu, Nisha Ganatra, David E Talbert, PJ Raval, Matt Tyrnauer, Alana Mayo, Ellene Miles, Adele, Kris Bowers, Terence Nance, Desiree Akhavan, Gillian Flynn, Chinonye Chukwu.
