3 is the charm… and then there were three. As much as I’d like to resist, it’s time to prepare to say goodbye to one of the best shows on television. Harlem’s third season is here, and while it brings us joy, it’s bittersweet knowing it’s also the final chapter. Tracy Oliver, thank you for delivering a series that beautifully showcased Black women, their friendships, relationships, and everyday lives. Harlem has earned its rightful place alongside TV greats like Living Single, Girlfriends, Insecure, and The First Wives Club.
In 2021, I had the privilege of sitting down with the cast for the premiere of this groundbreaking show. Fast forward to 2025, I’m here again, this time for a farewell conversation. What stands out most is how much love, growth, and family the cast and creator, Tracy Oliver, have poured into Harlem, both the show and the neighborhood.
Below, I’ve broken down my final interviews with the cast and creator into five sections, giving each their own spotlight as we celebrate the legacy of Harlem.
Tyler Lepley: A Leading Man Reflects
In this solo interview, Tyler Lepley, who plays Ian, opens up about his character’s evolution and the privilege of being a part of a show that prioritizes authenticity. Tyler discusses the challenges and joys of playing Ian, a man navigating love, career, and personal growth. He also reflects on the dynamics of working with such a talented, predominantly female cast and how Harlem offered him an opportunity to grow as an actor and ally.
Gail Bean and Logan Browning: The Power of Sisterhood
Sitting down with Gail Bean and Logan Browning, we dived into the beautiful complexities of female friendship. The two actresses share how their on-screen relationships mirror real-life bonds forged through the series. They discuss their characters’ journeys, the importance of representation, and the impact of portraying multi-dimensional Black women on screen. Their conversation is filled with laughter, anecdotes, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for their Harlem family.
Tracy Oliver: A Visionary Creator’s Farewell
Tracy Oliver, the mastermind behind Harlem, takes us behind the scenes to explore the process of wrapping up the series. She shares her thoughts on crafting a satisfying ending, the challenges of representing Harlem authentically, and the joy of working with a cast that became a second family. Tracy speaks passionately about the significance of closure in Black television, reflecting on the lessons she’s learned from shows like Moesha and Girlfriends.
Jerrie Johnson: A Breakout Star’s Journey
Jerrie Johnson, who plays Tye, takes center stage in this solo interview to discuss her groundbreaking portrayal of a queer, non-conforming tech entrepreneur. Jerrie talks about the importance of visibility and how Harlem gave her the space to explore and showcase a character rarely seen on screen. She shares her favorite moments from the series and what she hopes Tye’s journey will inspire in audiences.
Shoniqua Shandai and Grace Byers: Harlem’s Heart and Soul
Rounding out the interviews, Shoniqua Shandai (Angie) and Grace Byers (Quinn) sit down together to reflect on their characters’ journeys and the profound connection between the cast. They discuss the power of uplifting Black joy and how their characters’ stories intersect with Harlem’s rich history. From hilarious on-set moments to tearful goodbyes, their conversation is a beautiful celebration of friendship, resilience, and love.
Thank You, Harlem
Harlem is more than a show; it’s a love letter to Black womanhood, relationships, and the vibrant culture of its namesake city. Filmed in the heart of Harlem, the series authentically captured its beauty, history, and community, making it a character of its own.
Thank you, Tracy Oliver, and the brilliant cast—Meagan Good, Shoniqua Shandai, Jerrie Johnson, Grace Byers, and Tyler Lepley—for three unforgettable seasons. Harlem season 3 premieres today, January 23, on Amazon Prime Video. Don’t miss this poignant, joyful conclusion to a series that will be cherished for years to come.
