The Evolution of K-pop: The Iconic Leaders of Each Generation

K-pop, short for Korean pop music, has grown into a global phenomenon over the past few decades. Each generation of K-pop has been led by iconic groups and artists who have set trends and left a lasting impact on the industry. Here, we celebrate the actual leaders of each K-pop generation.

First Generation (1990s – early 2000s)

S.E.S: As one of the pioneering girl groups, S.E.S debuted in 1997 under SM Entertainment. Their hit songs like “I’m Your Girl” and “Dreams Come True” set the foundation for future girl groups.

H.O.T: Debuting in 1996, H.O.T (Highfive of Teenagers) was the first idol group produced by SM Entertainment. They are credited with establishing the K-pop idol culture and had massive hits like “Candy.”

Fin.K.L: Another iconic girl group from the late ’90s, Fin.K.L, debuted in 1998 under DSP Media. Known for their vocal prowess and catchy tunes, their songs like “Eternal Love” became anthems.

BoA: Debuting in 2000, BoA is often called the “Queen of K-pop.” As one of the first K-pop solo artists to achieve international success, she paved the way for future idols with her versatile talents.

Second Generation (mid-2000s – early 2010s)

TVXQ: Also known as DBSK, TVXQ debuted in 2003 and quickly became one of Asia’s most popular boy bands. Their powerful vocals and intricate choreography set a new standard for K-pop performance.

Third Generation (early 2010s – late 2010s)

GFriend: Known for their synchronized dance routines and powerful vocals, GFriend debuted in 2015 and quickly gained a large following with hits like “Rough” and “Me Gustas Tu.”

EXO: Debuting in 2012, EXO became one of the best-selling K-pop groups with hits like “Growl” and “Call Me Baby.” Their large international fanbase solidified their status as global stars.

Seventeen: A self-producing idol group, Seventeen debuted in 2015 and are known for their intricate choreographies and high-energy performances. Hits like “Adore U” showcase their talent.

BTS: Arguably the most famous K-pop group globally, BTS debuted in 2013 and have broken numerous records with their music and social impact. Their hits “Dynamite” and “Butter” are global anthems.

Blackpink: Debuting in 2016, Blackpink quickly rose to international fame with their powerful performances and stylish visuals. Hits like “DDU-DU DDU-DU” have amassed billions of views on YouTube.

Twice: Known for their catchy songs and infectious energy, Twice debuted in 2015 under JYP Entertainment. Songs like “Cheer Up” and “TT” have made them a staple in K-pop.

Red Velvet: Debuting in 2014, Red Velvet is known for their versatility, switching between bright and dark concepts effortlessly. Hits like “Red Flavor” and “Bad Boy” highlight their diverse style.

Fourth Generation (late 2010s – early 2020s)

Stray Kids: Debuting in 2018, Stray Kids have been praised for their self-produced music and powerful performances. Songs like “God’s Menu” have earned them a massive following.

Itzy: Known for their confidence and catchy tunes, Itzy debuted in 2019 and quickly became popular with hits like “Dalla Dalla” and “Wannabe.”
