The official trailer for the horror thriller “The Nun II,” the next chapter in the story of “The Nun,” the highest-grossing entry in the $2 billion “The Conjuring” Universe, has been released by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film is set in 1956 in France, after the murder of a priest, evil begins to spread, and Sister Irene is forced to confront Valak, the demon nun, once more.

Valak, who can take on multiple forms but appears to prefer this one, is one of the most terrifying monsters in The Conjuring universe.

Taissa Farmiga reprises her role as Sister Irene, who escaped Valak’s attempt to possess her in the sequel to “The Nun.” Irene was unaware that her friend, Frenchie (Jonas Bloquet), had not been as fortunate and that his body now belonged to the Nun. Sister Irene is unaware of how or why the Nun is haunting a new location in the official trailer. She does, however, understand Valak’s true intentions.

Valak is a demon who was once an angel, and his fall from grace appears to have robbed him of the power that the angel once possessed. Sister Irene believes Valak is attempting to regain those lost abilities. It remains to be seen how this relates to Valak tormenting a group of schoolgirls.

Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell round out the cast for the upcoming horror film, with Bonnie Aarons reprising her role from “The Nun.”

Michael Chaves directs from a screenplay by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, based on characters created by James Wan and Gary Dauberman.

Producers Peter Safran of The Safran Company and James Wan of Atomic Monster continue their collaboration as filmmakers on all previous “Conjuring” films. Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Michael Polaire executive produce “The Nun II.”

Four of the “The Conjuring” Universe titles have grossed more than $300 million worldwide (“The Nun,” $366 million; “The Conjuring 2,” $322 million; “The Conjuring,” $320 million; “Annabelle: Creation,” $307 million), and all seven have grossed more than $200 million. “The Nun” is the franchise’s highest-grossing film, earning more than $366 million worldwide.
