Between ‘Malcolm and Mary’ and ‘Judas and The Black Messiah’ February has been filled with films exploring the Black experience. Rounding out the month is Lee Daniels’ anticipated historical biopic ‘The United States vs Billie Holiday.’ The film takes a different approach from its predecessor, “Lady Sings The Blues,” focusing on the federal government and their relentless pursuit to try and prevent Billie from performing her song “Strange Fruit.” A song that gave the world a jarring look into the horrors Black people faced in the deep south and many parts of the United States. Staring Andre Day as Lady Day the film highlights how Billie fought the government with every ounce of her being for her voice to be heard despite every challenge thrown her way. Lee and the cast really bring Billie’s story to life as you could honestly see and understand all the pain and why she turned to her addiction to numb it all.
