Following the harrowing 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on New Year’s Day, a unique perspective emerges as one Twitch streamer bravely shares live footage of the unfolding disaster.

Seismic shockwaves jolted the West coast of Ishikawa Prefecture on Monday at 4 p.m., prompting a swift and record high-level alert for a potential tsunami, which has since been lowered.

Shiori, a Twitch streamer, found herself at the center of the chaos, live-streaming from her home in Niigata, four hours away. When a government earthquake alert blared from her cellphone, her broadcast abruptly changed.

“Oh my god, it’s big,” Shiori exclaimed to her viewers, briefly revealing the alert on her phone before the room began to quake. “I gotta go outside!”

As viewers witnessed Shiori’s room shake and heard the unsettling creaks of her house for over a minute, messages flooded the chat with expressions of concern, ranging from “Oh no” to “holy sh–.”

“I hope they get out safely,” one viewer wrote, encapsulating the collective worry of the audience.

Upon returning from outside, Shiori addressed her viewers, reassuring them with, “Guys, we’re OK, everybody’s alive.” However, the severity of the quake, possibly a level six, prompted her to announce immediate evacuation preparations.

In the ongoing aftermath, local officials diligently assess the damage, with unconfirmed reports of at least two casualties. Initial fears of tsunamis, with potential waves reaching up to 10 feet high and anticipated aftershocks in the coming days, persist. Coastal residents are emphatically urged to remain away from their homes as the situation unfolds.

According to government spokesperson Yoshimasa Hayashi, the impact is extensive, with at least six homes damaged, a fire outbreak in Ishikawa Prefecture, and over 30,000 people left without electricity.

CNN’s coverage extends beyond Japan, reporting heightened alert levels in South Korea and eastern Russia due to potential tsunamis affecting their coastlines in the wake of the earthquake.

As Japan grapples with this unforeseen disaster, Shiori’s inadvertent documentation serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and devastating nature of natural disasters, underlining the imperative need for preparedness and swift response in the face of such emergencies.
