South African singer Tyla isn’t here for the games! In a recent interview with The Breakfast Club, Tyla refused to be drawn into a discussion about the difference between being labeled “colored” and “black” in South Africa.
The issue flared up last year after a social media post sparked a debate. An online user jokingly claimed it was the first time rapper Travis Scott had been around a “black woman” in a photo with Tyla. However, South African commenters were quick to point out that Tyla is not “black” but “colored.”
This ignited a discussion between South Africans and African Americans due to the differing connotations of the terms. In the U.S., “colored” has a historically negative connotation, while in South Africa, it’s simply a broader term for people who aren’t white.
“The term ‘colored’ evolved to describe mixed-race South Africans,” explained Sybil Roberts, director of African American and African diaspora studies at American University, to The Hill. “However, this is controversial due to past anti-miscegenation laws. So, biracial and multiracial groups were designated ‘colored,’ but this term became problematic during and after apartheid.”
Tyla and her team opted to avoid reigniting the debate. During the Breakfast Club interview, Tyla declined to answer the question about the difference between the terms. It’s a smart move – who can blame her for wanting to steer clear of more social media drama?

Nah. What happened is that South African & other Africans became LIVID that Black Americans refused to call Tyla “COLORED” bc Colored is offensive in America.
“Americans not trying to understand Tyla saying she’s colored is different” correct because she’s in America. Lol sometimes I don’t understand y’all’s logic. This girl is trying to break into American markets why should we be learning her way?
if tyla is colored what is doja
y’all need to boycott the breakfast club
They hell they do now
asking tyla about the colored vs. black debate. from what i know she’s only said it once and it was years ago
Ughhh
What all this boils down to is that Tyla don’t want to admit being colored is better than being Black in South African but exactly what does make Tyla colored instead of Black cause that part is a little shady.
Don’t let a black person make ONE minuscule mistake. Y’all are quick to say “OFF WITH THEIR HEAD!!!”
Like damn, Tyla’s “colored” comment isn’t even wrong but we are always looking at everything from an American scope instead having an understanding of the WORLD outside of us…
All Tyla has to say there’s a specific type of mixed in her country which = coloured. Not the American old school colored but the South African coloured because she’s not American and the world doesn’t revolve around American classification.

She has explained that though lmao and ppl still dragged her, I don’t think she didn’t want to answer I think she’s answered before and the response opened her up to a lot of nonsense takes
Fair enough, she might have to have a tshirt with it at this point.
Just watched the interview tyla did on the breakfast club and when chalamagne asked her to explain being colored as a South African, her management didn’t want her to answer the question
If this was simply about American categorization of race, it wouldn’t end and begin with Tyla as it has been doing. If this is about non American history not being erased, how come folks never debate/debated Trevor. He’s not called Colored. Again, she’s being used as proxy
