The U.S. called for “accountability” after Israel admitted to killing a 16-year-old Palestinian girl in the occupied West Bank.
Soldiers reportedly shot Jana Zakarneh in the head while she was standing on the roof of her house. Zakarneh was looking for her cat when snipers shot her. Israel says it was an error.
A statement from the Israeli military said the killing of Zakarneh was unintentional and happened as they returned fire at gunmen on a rooftop. Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid expressed sorrow over the girl’s death and said his country continues to investigate the incident.
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said Zakarneh was killed “in cold blood” by an Israeli sniper, and he called on Israel to be held accountable.
