Vanessa Morgan, best known for her role on Riverdale, has announced her engagement to Canadian professional basketball player James Karnik. The actress shared the happy news in a festive Instagram post on Christmas Eve, showing off her stunning engagement ring in a series of images.
“Merry Christmas Eve from me and my fiancé,” Morgan captioned the post, which included moments from the romantic proposal.
Morgan, 31, and Karnik, 25, began dating in 2022, according to Us Weekly. The actress was previously married to baseball player Michael Kopech, with whom she shares a son, River Dante, born in January 2021.
In a second Instagram post, Morgan gave fans a closer look at the dazzling 4.64-carat oval-shaped engagement ring designed by Brilliant Earth. The “Custom Secret Butterfly Garden Ring” features a 14K rose gold band and blue marquise-cut diamonds designed to resemble butterflies.
“This relationship is a testimony to the blessings God brings when you fully surrender and trust in his perfect timing,” Morgan wrote. “I’m so grateful to get to experience this kind of love in this lifetime. Lysm.”
A Magical Proposal
The proposal took place on December 21 at Glow Langley, a light festival in Canada. Speaking to People, Morgan revealed that the surprise was as magical as it was unexpected.
“James knows how much I love Christmas, especially all the festive lights, so he took me to the Langley Glow Light Festival,” she shared. “I honestly thought he was going to propose on Christmas morning, so it came as a complete shock when it happened.”
Morgan detailed how Karnik, despite nursing an injured foot and using crutches, went out of his way to make the evening special.
“James put down his crutches to ‘adjust his shoe,’ and that’s when I started to suspect something was up,” she recalled. “Then, in the middle of all the lights and people, he dropped his crutches, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.”
Karnik had secretly hired a professional photographer to capture the proposal, with the photographer blending into the crowd to avoid raising suspicion.
A Family Celebration
Morgan and Karnik welcomed their daughter, Kaia, earlier this year. Kaia, who will turn five months old on December 27, joins Morgan’s son River Dante in their blended family.
Reflecting on the proposal, Morgan described the ring as “the best Christmas present ever,” while Karnik expressed his excitement about designing the unique piece.
“The final result created a truly unique ring based on what Vanessa loves, something she will treasure and be very special to her,” Karnik told People.
