Kylie Brewer has seen that there are white women who have faith in raising their kids with nannies of color but themselves are racist. She calls it a leftover from before the Civil War.
In her video “When rac*st white women hire Black/Brown nannies”, Brewer finds the behavior perplexing and also persistent.
“The wildest thing is seeing these white women whose children, whose very children that they trust to be raised by Black and brown women, I’ve seen them be racist,” Brewer said. “And it is one of the most bizarre experiences and probably one of the most insane holdovers from the antebellum era. It’s something that I really don’t think has gone away.”
Antebellum era means the period before the Civil War, when enslaved black women from the southern part of America had no choice but to raise the kids of the white masters who had owned them.
According to Brewer, this tendency remains prevalent today in hiring and pay.
“It’s white women outsourcing child care and labor to Black and brown women, specifically immigrants or people of lower socioeconomic background, underpaying them, certainly,” she says.
She believes that cost is the main reason behind this trend.
“And I think that is why a lot of immigrants are being hired here, because white people in general are looking for cheaper ways of having labor,” Brewer says. “And people that don’t have, like, you know, citizenship here can be paid under the table in that way.”
According to her, outsourcing childcare responsibility does not mean depriving someone of their dignity.
“It’s just bizarre, because it’s like, if you trust people to raise your children, you should absolutely be treating them with respect!” she says.
She also criticizes parents who have outsourced almost everything related to their children’s upbringing.
“And most of these moms, might I add, most of these dads as well, do not even know their children,” Brewer says. “This is something that they’re just outsourcing completely. It’s very racist, very weird.”
With a message to viewers, she ends her video saying, “And please be kind.”
