Why Ashley Hann and Gerard Adams Are Being Canceled?

A woman and her husband dressed themselves and their baby up as “Indigenous” people for Halloween, which resulted in a massive backlash from the Indigenous community and more for their cultural appropriation.

Ashley Hann and Gerard Adams posted their costumes on Instagram, and their post received over 10,000 comments, the majority being backlash. They recently updated their caption from the original post. Check what they had to say down below.

First off, thank you to those of you who have supported and empowered us and thank you to those who respectfully came to us with love to shine light on the issue of cultural appropriation. We appreciate your genuine care and concern.

Secondly, we apologize if our costumes felt in any way disrespectful or hurtful to anyone of Native American descent. This of course was not our intention, however we understand that people may have received it in this way.

Our truth is, we felt so excited to dress in these outfits because of the respect and admiration we have for the Native American culture. Our intention was simply a pure expression of that. We would not dress as something that we do not feel inspired by (G and I typically dress up as Super Heroes and so if anything, we felt it would make the statement of how we see Native Americans as super heroes in their own right and hold them in such high regard).

We do see that our intention was not received or interpreted this way by everyone who saw our post.

Our commitment moving forward is to do our absolute best to be as intentional as possible in all of our choices and to provide context where necessary or needed. We also look forward to continuing to open
and move dialogue forward around the many pieces that this post has opened up for us. We are grateful that this all has happened FOR us to grow, expand and use to create intentional impact.

We value diversity- diversity in cultures and diversity in opinions/perspectives/beliefs. We value and are grateful for the contrast. We also know that we don’t have to agree with each other to love and respect each
other. And the stand we are is a stand for a world of LOVE, RESPECT and UNITY.

Although they apologized, they didn’t take the post down and it seems like Ashley Hann comes off as very disingenuous after sharing that she gained more followers than she lost on her Instagram. She continues by expressing her feelings about the “Irony” of the situation.
