A Winston-Salem State University student named Leilla Marie was arrested yesterday for not apologizing to her professor Dr. Cynthia Villagomez after she refused to make changes to her final presentation.
Leilla Marie got released from police custody with an injury and hit with a charge of a second-degree misdemeanor. She went into detail about her arrest during an Instagram live. Marie claims that her professor told her that her group project was wrong and had to be corrected, on short notice.
Marie’s group decided not to redo the project, and her professor Dr. Cynthia Villagomez told them that their decision to not revise the project, will impact their “grade a lot.”
Marie and her professor got into a shouting match before Marie got asked to leave the class. Marie refused to leave the class. Professor Villagomez told a colleague, which led to the campus police being called.
In the video down below is what you can see the aftermath of the campus police arriving at the classroom to arrest Leilla Marie.
Leilla Marie takes responsibility for cussing at her Professor but doesn’t feel in the wrong about anything else that transpired.
She won’t be returning to Winston-Salem State University after the incident. Leilla Marie reveals that she “will no longer represent WSSU” on her Instagram live.
Winston-Salem State University released a statement about the incident:
“Regarding the incident, the university has a process we must follow when there is a reported disturbance anywhere on campus. We received a report that there was a significant commotion in Carolina Hall this morning, and as such, a WSSU employee nearby called for the assistance of law enforcement after they tried to de-escalate the situation.”
“In accordance with law enforcement procedures, our officer’s first priority is to assess the situation and provide every opportunity for a positive resolution. As situations escalate, their responsibility is to ensure the safety of the students, faculty, and staff members that are present.”
“We understand that the weaponization of police is a prevalent problem in our community; however, that is not what happened in this incident. We strive for a safe, inclusive, thriving, and intellectual community where all our faculty, staff, and students feel respected and supported. To that end, we will take swift and appropriate measures against any situation that contradicts those ideals.
We know this situation has caused a great deal of trauma to those involved and our campus community at large, but please know that every available resource is being extended to bring a resolution.”
Leilla Marie will appear in court on January 25, 2023, for the second-degree misdemeanor charge.
