Woman Says Life in the ’90s and 2000s Was “More Saturated, Bright, Fun and Carefree” Because Everything Was Designed With Children in Mind

A woman is raising some questions on a social media platform about the fact that the years of the 1990s and 2000s seemed so special, lively, and vivid because society had made children the highest priority back then.

The TikToker, who goes by the name JBunzie, cites colorful fashion, cartoons enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, playful fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s in the 1990s, and the idea that summer was the best season for children as evidence of a better era.

According to the video, our lives are currently considered “sucks” because almost nothing interests children. This opinion is supported by a quote in the post: focusing on children used to benefit everyone, whereas today’s emphasis on billionaires and corporations harms society as a whole.

“You know, the only reason why the ’90s and the 2000s felt so special, so electric, so alive, was simply because it was the first and only time kids were the focus in society,” JBunzie says in the video. “They were the. They were treated as the number one consumer. Therefore everything had to cater towards children, and therefore adults got to benefit from that because everything became more vibrant and exciting.”

According to her, this shift brought people happiness in general.

“And so for everyone, people were generally happier because they were surrounded by more color, more eccentricity, more creativity and more things that were unique,” she says.

Moreover, JBunzie highlights the pop culture of the time, shaped by the young mood of that epoch.

“If you look at the pop stars, the pop stars looked like your older sister, your older brother. They wore clothing that was super cool and youthful and fresh, vibrant tops like these with fun little trinkets like Hello Kitty,” she says. “You saw, you know, a lot of our food places in bright colors. Look at McDonald’s in the ’90s, look at Taco Bell. Um, they focus on everything being like a summer theme.”

The TikToker directly associates the summer theme with children’s freedom.

“So it’s no wonder 2000 Barbie was Summer Barbie, Beach Barbie, Malibu Barbie,” she says. “Because summer is the time of the kids, the time that they can go out and enjoy their youth. Cause they weren’t in school.”

In addition, JBunzie compliments the animation of that era, citing the artists’ efforts because children were the target audience.

“And our cartoons had a lot of effort put in them, a lot of detail. I mean, incredible cartoons.” She spoke of a time when kids were the market, and that many adults were able to enjoy it too. The influence, she said, went as far as consumer technology.

Even in the technological field, she wonders whether this attitude influenced anything. The G fours and the Max came in bright colors intended for children but nice for adults too. Adults could enjoy the color, and overall, everything seemed more saturated, brighter, more fun, and carefree.

However, JBunzie cites the current state of affairs as a contrast to that time. Moreover, she criticizes the gray toys that are intended to blend into adult home interiors.

If you look at what’s on the shelves now, she notes, kids’ toys are often in shades of sad beige to match mom’s interior design. It seemed crazy to her.

Also, she mourns the loss of stores aimed at pre-teens.

Now it seems we are catering to adults again, she says, to the point that you have to ask yourself: when was the last pre-teen store opened? Where is Justice or Route 21? Nowhere. And that’s why kids dress up as adults because there is nothing left to wear.

Thus, JBunzie finishes the video by calling for changes.

As a society, she says, we have to get back to prioritizing kids. It might bring a bit more fun to our lives.
