A TikTok user’s account of a past relationship has drawn attention online after she described a phone call in which one of her boyfriend’s friends used a racial slur to refer to her.
The user, who posts under the handle @tiniesttay, said in the video that she is a woman of mixed race and that a series of experiences has led her to decline romantic interest from white men. She did not identify the man she dated or the friend who made the call.
“And while I’m on the topic of it might not be you, but people have reasons,” she said. “When white men try to talk to me romantically, it’s a no for me, dog. Like I did date a white guy one time and one time months into our relationship, one of his friends called him on speakerphone and dropped the hard ER.”
The phrase refers to a version of the slur n*****, which the friend used in reference to her, according to her account.
She said the relationship continued for a short time after the call, and that another conversation followed as the couple traveled to meet his family.
“A couple weeks after that, um, I was going to visit his home with him, and on the way there he broke the news to me that his granny is racist and probably wouldn’t like us being together,” she said.
“And, um, some more things happened, and I just came up with the idea that while it may be inaccurate, this is my theory: I think all or most white people are in close proximity to racists, whether it is their friends or family. They have a racist person in their lives. Um, so we, we can’t go together like peanut butter and jelly dog because no.”
She went on to describe her own family background and her identity.
“My grandparents are in their 80s and grew up in Tennessee. My dad was nine when schools were desegregated in Tennessee,” she said. “I just, I know I don’t look unambiguous, but believe me, this is a black love. This is, yeah. I’m so sorry to disappoint anybody, but this ain’t that.”
