Coco Gauff beat Rebeka Masarova 6-1, 6-1 in Sunday’s rain-interrupted final.
The 18-year-old American, who claimed her third WTA Tour-level trophy, did not drop a set in any of her five matches – two of which got played indoors.
The Atlanta-born tennis star becomes just the fourth ASB Classic women’s champion since 2009 to win it without dropping a set (Elena Dementieva ‘09, Yanina Wickmayer ‘10, Agnieszka Radwanska ‘13).
Dementieva and Radwanska were also the No. 1 seeds for the tournament in the years they achieved it.
Gauff was on a five-match-losing streak before arriving in Auckland. A great way to start the year, Gauff aims to add her first Grandslam title to her resume to join the greatest of greats.
She spoke about winning her title in Auckland via Twitter. She says, “I am so thankful to win my 3rd WTA title and take a W at the first tournament of my 2023 season! Thank you ASB Classic for an amazing week. Most importantly thank you God for continuing to bless me in this life. I am so grateful for it all. Let’s keep going upwards.”
Coco Gauff will head to Melbourne next for the Australian Open.
