A college graduate who just turned 22 years old is now suing the staff members who worked during a graduation trip to the Bahamas after the young woman lost both her legs to a boat’s propeller after staff members urged her to consume alcohol and marijuana.

According to the lawsuit, Hannah Smith claims that the incident occurred during her trip to Pearl Island Beach via a Catamaran Ferry on a Carnival Cruise line to celebrate her graduation.

Smith alleges that employees of Sun Cay provided guests with free drinks, such as rum punch, as soon as they boarded the ferry. According to the lawsuit, passengers consumed alcohol throughout their entire trip, while the employees served drinks even into passengers’ mouths. The lawsuit further indicates that employees urged passengers to consume marijuana.

As per the complaint, when Smith needed to relieve herself of the need to urinate, employees informed Smith that she could urinate while swimming in the waters surrounding the boat because the engine of the boat had been shut down. While Smith was holding on to the railings of the boat, the boat’s engine was turned on, and the propeller cut through Smith’s legs when she tried to board the vessel.

Due to the injuries caused by the boat’s propeller, Smith suffered more than 60 percent blood loss. She received treatment first at the local hospital before being transported to a hospital in Miami via air ambulance. Doctors were unable to save her legs and conducted numerous operations and transfusions on her.

Smith sued Sun Cay, Pearl Investment Management Group, and Carnival Cruise Line due to negligence.
