Social media users are commenting on a video showing actor Hannah Einbinder being escorted from a street protest in Manhattan by NYPD police officers on Thursday. According to the video, the actress was arrested because she was chanting “arrest Netanyahu” during a demonstration to support Palestinians.
PIX11 reports that about 100 people, including prominent New York politicians and celebrities, were arrested during the protest near the UN. As PIX11 reporters witnessed, police escorted actors Susan Sarandon and Einbinder from the protest. The protest drew several hundred people to First Avenue near 39th Street, close to the UN General Assembly.
The protest took place simultaneously with Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech at the General Assembly. CBS New York reported that Jewish Voice for Peace organized the protest, with dozens of people blocking the intersection of 39th Street and First Avenue and police arresting protesters.
At the time, police had not yet officially announced charges against Einbinder, and it was unclear whether the chant played a part in her arrest. Most of the arrested people stayed seated on the road after police cleared it.
Einbinder, a character on HBO’s “Hacks,” is Jewish and is a vocal supporter of Palestinians. The actress won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series in September 2025, finishing her speech with “Go Birds, (expletive) ICE and free Palestine.” The actress said backstage that she feels a responsibility to separate Jews from the state of Israel.
In addition, the actress signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge, where thousands of representatives of the entertainment industry promised not to work with Israeli film institutions they consider guilty of committing genocide and apartheid against Palestinians. The actress participated in other Jewish Voice for Peace demonstrations, such as civil disobedience protests in April in New York calling for stopping weapons supplies to Israel.
Online reaction was mixed; some fans appreciated the actress’s activism, while others criticized the protest.
