Charithra Chandran, who has appeared in Bridgerton and Netflix’s One Piece, believes that people who refuse to discuss their voting preferences typically identify themselves as right-leaning.
In a TikTok video, Chandran said that people who avoid answering who they voted for, or say it is a private matter, are almost always proponents of right-wing politics. The idea has been an ongoing discussion among pollsters for decades in relation to “shy” conservative voters. Researchers say there is no evidence of any kind, and it largely depends on context.
“If you ask someone who they voted for and they avoid the question or they say something like, ‘It’s private, it’s a secret. They voted right wing like 100% of the time, almost exclusively, it’ll be right wing people who don’t wanna tell you who they voted for. Why?” Chandran commented on TikTok.
Chandran, 29, has become increasingly vocal about politics lately. In April 2025, the actress posted a popular TikTok criticizing the U.K. Supreme Court’s decision that the legal definition of a woman under Britain’s Equality Act refers to biological sex. In March, she wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin on the Academy Awards red carpet and told reporters she could not accept the deaths of children and civilians in Gaza.
Chandran was born in Perth, Scotland, in 1997 to Tamil parents who worked in medicine, and was raised mostly in Oxford, England. She graduated from New College, Oxford, with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics in 2019, and worked part-time at the New Policy Institute, a London-based think tank, until she turned down a consulting job to pursue acting.
She gained recognition as Edwina Sharma in the second season of Netflix’s Bridgerton in 2022 after a leading role in the spy series Alex Rider. Now she plays Nefertari Vivi, also known as Miss Wednesday, in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the manga One Piece, where she was added for the show’s second season.
