Golf social media star Paige Spiranac decided not to air her thoughts on the midterm elections when a follower asked her on Instagram, since she doesn’t comment on issues outside her expertise.
The fan wrote, “Thoughts on the mid terms,” which Spiranac responded to in her Instagram story.
“With a big platform comes big responsibility,” Spiranac wrote. “I know this isn’t a popular take, but I will never discuss topics I don’t feel I’m an expert on.”
The former professional golfer, who has gained a large following through social media, explained that being a social media influencer doesn’t mean her opinions matter more.
“My voice isn’t more important because I have ‘followers’ I don’t feel that most people really even want my opinion on current events,” she wrote. “They just want my opinion to be the same as their opinion, which leads to unhealthy conversations.”
In addition, Spiranac explained that she would prefer her account to serve as a refuge from politics for her followers.
“There’s so much political commentary and content online that I also like my page to be an escape,” she wrote. “Just silly golf content you can look forward to.”
