Albanian-American artist ENISA appeals to other musicians and Albanians, urging them to protest against the construction of a luxury hotel which, according to her, prioritizes outside interests over local residents. The resort project is tied to the American businessman Jared Kushner’s investment fund.
As an international artist with fans on both continents, she shared a lengthy post on social media, addressing her compatriots and calling on them to oppose the ‘selling off’ of their national land.
“For centuries, Albanians have fought, sacrificed, and given their lives to protect our land, our identity, and our future. That is why it is painful to see parts of Albania treated as something that can simply be handed over in the name of ‘economic growth,'” ENISA shared on her Twitter account. “Development should benefit Albanian citizens first, not make life more unaffordable or push people out of the communities they grew up in.”
Protests took place recently in response to plans to build a resort with several hotels, villas, and a marina near Sazan Island and within a specially protected coastal region called Vjosa-Narta. The slogan of the protests was “Albania is not for sale.”
Although ENISA did not mention any names or companies, the project in question belongs to Jared Kushner’s investment company.
“This isn’t about who is buying or investing,” the artist noted. “It’s about whether the interests of Albanians are being protected.”
According to her, openness to the world is important, but one must know where the limit lies.
“Albania should always welcome visitors and investment, but Albanian land is not just another asset to be sold for the benefit of outside interests,” ENISA added. “It is part of our history, identity, and inheritance. Investment should serve the Albanian people first and foremost.”
Meanwhile, investigations were opened into potential fraud involving land titles for this project, and some property assets were seized. The government claims that this construction will stimulate tourism and economic growth.
Moreover, she asked Albanian artists to use their fame to take part in the protests.
“I stand with the Albanians who believe our future should never come at the expense of our own citizens. Would love to see more Albanian artists speak up and show up. That’s what our platforms are for,” ENISA noted.
At the moment, no results have been announced from the investigation.
