Former UFC Light Heavyweight contender Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson has passed away at the age of 38 years old due to battling an illness. The cause of death has yet to be announced.

Ariel Helwani broke the tragic news on Twitter earlier today.

Horrible news: Anthony “Rumble” Johnson passed away today. He was 38 years old. Johnson had been battling an illness for quite some time. One of the hardest hitters and most talented fighters in MMA history. Gone way too soon. May he rest in peace.

The former knockout artist had two stints in the UFC from 2007-2012 and 2014-2017. He started as a welterweight (170 pounds) and moved to light heavyweight (205 pounds). Although Johnson never won the title, he has impressive victories over future Hall of Famers such as Glover Teixeira, Ryan Bader, Alexander Gustafsson, and Phil Davis.

After losing to Daniel Cormier in the UFC light heavyweight championship bout, he retired from the sport. In 2021, he returned to MMA to compete in the Bellator. In Johnson’s first fight back in four years, he defeated Jose Augusto by second-round knockout. He was set to compete against Vadim Nemkov for the light heavyweight championship in his next fight but had to withdraw due to an undisclosed illness.

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson finished his pro-MMA career with a record of 23-6, with 17 wins coming by KO/TKO. He was the most humble fighter that ever graced the octagon, and he will be severely missed by many.

Thank you, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson for the many great memories. Our condolences to his family and friends.
