Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez linked budget reductions in federal science departments during the presidency of Donald Trump to a sharp growth in the number of Americans suffering from explosive diarrhea in a video chat with a journalist, along with lettuce recalls and the World Cup.
The journalist at MeidasTouch, Pablo Manriquez, asked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her opinion on budget cuts in science and the increase in infectious disease cases. This question arose from the recent case involving food safety and the recall of lettuce grown in Mexico, where the outbreak occurred. It sparked the political debate over government control and regulation.
“I mean, there’s a direct correlation here,” said Ocasio-Cortez. She highlighted job cuts at the NIH and the FDA, which occurred about a year ago as a result of actions by the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.
“A year ago, you had DOGE ripping through the NIH and the FDA. They laid off about a quarter of a million people,” she said, noting that these workers performed inspections of food and medicines and traced any outbreaks.
According to Ocasio-Cortez, America is experiencing its biggest outbreak in years “because Trump and Elon slashed all of those people,” meaning President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. She claims that the country has never spent as much money on this problem as it is now, because contractors are doing everything.
