Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called for President Trump’s removal from office Monday after he posted a warning on Truth Social suggesting “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran fails to meet his deadline for a deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s post on the social media platform declared that “47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end,” and called for “Complete and Total Regime Change” in Iran.
While the president said he did not want harm to come to the country, he added that it “probably will,” and offered what he described as hope for “something revolutionarily wonderful” for the Iranian people.
“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump wrote. “God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
Ocasio-Cortez characterized the statement as an explicit threat of mass violence.
“This is a threat of genocide and merits removal from office,” she wrote on X. “The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted.”
The congresswoman also issued a warning to military and government officials within the presidential chain of command.
“To every individual in the President’s chain of command: You have a duty to refuse illegal orders,” she wrote. “That includes carrying out this threat.”
