A freshman at Southern University posted a heart-wrenching message to her Instagram on Wednesday, thanking her family and friends for their support while stating that she was prepared to take her own life.

“To everyone I love, just remember that this is not your fault and I pray you don’t find guilt in my situation,” she wrote near the end of her post.

Sadly, the young woman took her own life. The SU student has been identified as Arlana Miller. Miller was a freshman who was majoring in agriculture on the Baton Rouge campus. Arlana was a native of Texas and one of our Southern University cheerleaders.

Southern University released a statement on Thursday morning about Arlana Miller passing:

Southern University is mourning the loss of Arlana Miller, a member of the cheerleading squad.

Southern Athletics sends our sympathy to Arlana’s family and friends,” said SU Director of Athletics Roman Banks. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, rest of our department staff and student-athletes; and the entire SU community. Jaguar Nation is a close community and we grieve together during this difficult time. Arlana’s teammates and coaches are also in mourning, and we are grateful for everyone who is helping and supporting the team.”

Arlana was a freshman student from Dallas, Texas pursuing a degree in agriculture and was her first year as an SU cheerleader.

“Arlana made an impact on our team in a short time,” said SU Cheerleading Coach Floyd Sias. “She was extremely dedicated to her sport, a tremendously hard worker, and a warm and engaging young woman. She will be missed.”

Our thoughts are with her family; her teammates and friends.

The mental and physical well-being of our students is one of the University’s highest priorities, therefore, our University Counseling Center (UCC) and partners are available for any students who may need support during this difficult time. We will have counseling available all day on the 3rd floor of the A.W. Mumford Fieldhouse for student-athletes and department staff.
