In a dazzling celebration, the city of Barranquilla unveiled a towering 6.5-meter bronze statue honoring its most celebrated native, international pop sensation Shakira.
Crafted by the skilled hands of artist Yino Márquez, the monumental piece stands proudly on the banks of the Magdalena River, capturing the essence of the artist’s iconic belly dance.
Mayor Jaime Pumero, in a heartfelt tribute, encapsulated Shakira’s multifaceted talents, praising her composing heart, truth-telling hips, unmatched vocal prowess, and her commitment to humanitarian causes, symbolized by her bare feet marching for the greater good. The unveiling was accompanied by a video showcasing the grand moment and expressing the city’s collective pride.
The bronze sculpture masterfully portrays Shakira in mid-dance, her curly hair cascading over her face, surrounded by a skirt made of aluminum symbolizing the waves of the sea and the river that embrace Barranquilla. With arms raised high, the statue reflects the transcendence of the artist.
The event was graced by the presence of Shakira’s parents, Nidia Ripoll and William Mebarak Chadid, adding a personal touch to the occasion. The accompanying plaque chronicles Barranquilla’s pride, marking the singer’s birth on February 2, 1977, and highlighting her artistic achievements, philanthropy, and global impact.
Though absent physically, Shakira took to Instagram to express her gratitude, sharing moments of the unveiling with her parents. She spoke of her joy in being able to share the special occasion, especially on her mother’s birthday.
Mayor Pumarejo emphasized the profound impact the sculpture would have on the city’s identity, fostering a sense of pride among Barranquilla residents. He stated, “With this sculpture, Barranquilla residents will feel more proud of our cultural reference, closer to her, and she will receive a tribute from the city that she loves so much.”
The unveiling of this magnificent statue stands as a testament to Shakira’s enduring influence on Barranquilla, solidifying her status not only as a global music icon but also as a cherished cultural symbol deeply rooted in the hearts of her hometown.
