Shakira will receive the Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which will be held on September 12 in New Jersey.
MTV announced on Monday that the Colombian pop star will be the first artist from the South American region to receive this award and perform at the show.
This year, Shakira has been nominated for four awards, including Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for TQG with Karol G, and Best Latin for both TQG and Acróstico.
In a press release, Bruce Gilmer, Paramount’s president of music, music talent, programming, and events, and Paramount+’s chief content officer for music, expressed his admiration for the Colombian superstar.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique, musical prowess,” Bruce Gillmer said. She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.”
Bruce added that her impact on the musical landscape will be long-lasting due to her continued high-level creation and entertainment.
Shakira, who debuted in the early 1990s, won her first VMA for International Viewer Selection (Latin America North) in 2000 for Ojos Así.
In 2002, she received her third award for best choreography in a video in the same category for Whenever, Wherever/Suerte. She also received the award in 2007 for her well-known collaboration with Beyoncé, Beautiful Liar.
Beyoncé, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, LL Cool J, Missy Elliott, Justin Timberlake, and The Beatles are among the previous winners of the prestigious award.
