BET plans to honor famed rapper and philanthropist Nipsey Hussle with the Humanitarian Award at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday, June 23.
The award will commemorate Nipsey’s efforts to promote financial literacy, real estate acquisition and violence prevention in South Los Angeles.
Through his clothing brand, The Marathon, the 33-year-old hired formerly incarcerated people and residents of underemployed communities. Nipsey was tragically shot right outside of the store in March.
Nipsey also created Vector 90 with his business partner David Gross. Vector90 provides technical training, professional development and a comprehensive launch curriculum for start-ups. It’s a stem center for Crenshaw and the rest of South Central Los Angeles.
Nipsey was also going to speak in front of presidential candidate Cory Booker and other Congressional leaders to get the ‘Our Opportunity’ Zones legislations running. Our Opportunity is a powerful, community-aligned coalition, devoted to restoring hope in forgotten communities across inner-city America. Their mission is to use private investment as a tool to rewrite the narrative of our neighborhoods.
Nipsey was truly a King in the black community. He was making an impact and difference, he gave our people hope. Instead of living his hood to move to Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills. He reinvested his money back into the same neighborhood he grow up at. Which is honorable and respectable thing to do. Nipsey talk the talk and walked the walk.
