Carl Weathers, best remembered for his iconic portrayal as Apollo Creed in the Rocky film franchise, died on Tuesday at the age of 76, according to Deadline.
The news was confirmed by Weathers’ family in a heartfelt statement: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life.”
Weathers’ contribution to the entertainment industry is enormous. From his remarkable performance as Apollo Creed, Rocky Balboa’s fierce opponent, in the first four Rocky films to his performances in other great films such as Predator, Action Jackson, and Happy Gilmore, his versatility and charisma made him a popular figure with fans.
Beyond his film career, Weathers has made important contributions to television, most recently as Greef Karga in The Mandalorian. His ability to fluidly switch across genres demonstrated his talent and solidified his position as a recognized performer.
The statement from his family acknowledged Weathers’ multifaceted legacy, stating, “Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations.”
Weathers was not only a talented actor but also a beloved family member and friend. The statement continued, describing him as a “beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”
