Cherie DeVille stated in a recent WWE documentary that there were striking similarities in how business is conducted between pro wrestling and the adult entertainment industry, as she noted on the “And We Drink” podcast.
DeVille did not remember the name of the documentary but was sure that it was published no more than five years ago. According to her statements, while watching it, she noted similarities in how contracts are structured to harm performers across both industries.
“While watching it, I just was struck by how incredibly similar their business model is to, but not in the good ways,” DeVille said in the podcast clip.
She cited examples of contracts in which performers are considered independent contractors despite the strict schedule and the requirement that they pay for all of their injuries themselves.
“You can be contracted with a company, but you still have to pay your medical bills and injuries,” DeVille said. “And you know, you’re still completely an independent business person, but you can be beholden to a schedule.”
According to Cherie, this type of business model is generally beneficial only to top executives, who reap all the profits. At the same time, performers, putting their bodies on the line, don’t earn a fortune. Speaking about what she saw in the documentary about WWE, she said performers were “used and abused a bit,” and only a few could achieve sufficient success to remain financially stable after their bodies could no longer cope with the demands of the profession.
However, she admitted that documentaries cannot show the full picture and said, “as I know from documentaries, they’re not always great.” However, she left with the impression that only a few professional wrestlers achieve financial stability.
