Kicking off one of Hollywood’s first red carpet events since the pandemic is a timely documentary that landed on this year’s Oscar Eligibility List for an Academy Award in the Best Documentary Feature category. Chicago: America’s Hidden War premieres Thursday, May 6 at the iconic Regency Westwood Theatre. Represented by CAA and distributed by CineLife Entertainment – a division of Mark Cuban’s Spotlight Cinemas – the film opens in movie theaters nationwide on May 12, 2021.
Recently featured in Forbes, Chicago: America’s Hidden War is a documentary that pulls back the curtain on violence in Chicago with the intention to create real change. This urgent film challenges viewers to consider the larger impact street violence has on entire communities. Youth programs are taking kids to the theaters with the help of Hollywood celebrities, social justice leaders, faith communities and media personalities. Theaters offering buyouts in partnership with the producers of Chicago: America’s Hidden War will be utilizing CinemaSafe, a program that promotes “protocols and guidelines developed and supported by leading epidemiologists to support a safe return to movie theatres.”
The film was directed by Daylight Supreme and produced by Dimas and Tiffany Salaberrios, Mark W. Shaw, John Shepherd, Dr. A.R. Bernard, Lu-Shawn Thompson, David Pierce, Ron Hall, Eric Rojas, Richard Steele and Max Zoghbi in association with Miss Muffet and Six+One Studios, Shaw Entertainment Group and SDG.
Daylight Supreme, who is a former drug boss, is grateful this powerful film will finally be released across the country to help spotlight urgent issues occurring in Chicago and other inner cities throughout the nation.
“America can no longer allow the war being waged in its Heartland to remain hidden. Playing political games over gun control misses the point. Instead of pointing fingers that ‘they are just doing this to themselves’, it’s time we as a nation move from apathy to empathy and into action over these dire issues devastating our fellow Americans,” said Daylight Supreme.
Entire generations continually grow up in real fear for their lives within earshot of rapid gunfire echoing throughout the day and night on the city’s South and West sides. Some of the most memorable moments of this searing film come from mere children. One young boy in the movie expressed he is so afraid of being killed by a stray bullet that even during the blistering hot summer, he slept under his bed for over a month just to survive the night. He isn’t given to paranoia or false fear. Multiple stray bullets dot the walls of his home, pigeonholing him to employ such a drastic strategy in America’s third most populous city. The fact that a very real war rages on American soil in the middle of our country and has been allowed to fester is wholly unacceptable.
A growing list of celebs joining in this buy out effort include Denzel and Pauletta Washington, Charlamagne tha God, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, Willie Robertson, Darryl Strawberry, Dexter Darden, JoJo, Curtis Martin, Dean and Scott Winters, Angie Stone, BeBe Winans, Clifton Davis and more.
The premiere will take place at the Regency Village Theater on Thursday, May 6. The red carpet will start promptly at 6pm. The film will start at 7pm, followed by a Q&A panel. The film opens in theaters on Wednesday, May 12 nationwide.
